Metamorfose after M.C.Escher was commissioned by the New European Ensemble The Hague as part of Metamorfose: a musical journey into the world of MC Escher, a project in collaboration with visual artist Deframe on the occasion of the M.C. Escher 125th anniversary, and is an homage to the great Dutch artist, whose work has fascinated me for a very long time. The piece was composed to be performed with video projections, however, it can be performed also as a concert piece in its own right. As the title suggests, it is modelled after Escher’s series of prints titled Metamorphose I, II and III, themselves incorporating a number of themes that can be found throughout Escher’s works. The result is a musical fresco in seven episodes, inspired by the theme of transformation on multiple levels.
"...melodic, being almost Gershwinesque at times..."
