It is a great honour to be invited to compose a work for the anniversary of any cultural institution, and the emotions are very intense when it comes to one’s city of birth and the Ploiești Philharmonic. The invitation is all the more honouring considering that half a century ago our city and it’s orchestra inspired one of the most important Romanian composers to compose ”Simfonia Ploieșteană”. In this masterpiece, Paul Constantinescu captures in a neoclassical style the spirit of Ploiești’s history, the perfume of the first half of the 20th Century. In the 21st Century, his music helps us rediscover that spirit.

As a millenial composer, I have tried to find inspiration in the Ploiești of my childhood, and the Philharmonic, along with the Art School, were the places where I was initiated into classical music, but also exposed to urban folklore and jazz. The title “Ploiești Polyphonies” denotes as much the structure of the work and it’s concept: a syntesis of classical music with urban floklore and jazz, within the structure of a symphonic fugue. All three ingredients are present from the first bars, in the subject of the fugue, played on the violin by the concertmaster. The theme amplifies very fast and is developed within the whole ensemble, that showcases virtually all the instruments of the modern symphony orchestra, including a cimbalom! Towards the end of the work, the symphony orchestra makes way for the jazz trio, that improvises a cadenza on the fugue subject, the last episode before a tribal tutti coda.

Este o mare onoare să fii invitat să compui o lucrare cu ocazia aniversării unei instituții de cultură, iar emoțiile sunt foarte intense când e vorba de orașul natal și filarmonica din Ploiești, care poartă numele unuia dintre eroii muzicali ai copilăriei mele. Invitația este cu atât mai onorantă având în vedere că orașul nostru și orchestra sa l-au inspirat pe unul dintre cei mai mari compozitori români, acum o jumătate de secol, să compună ”Simfonia Ploieșteană”. În această capodoperă Paul Constantinescu surprinde în stilul său neoclasic spiritul Ploieștiului istoric, parfumul primei jumătăți a secolului XX. În secolul XXI, muzica lui ne ajută să redescoperim în noi acest spirit.

Ca un compozitor milenial, am încercat să mă inspir din Ploieștiul în care am crescut, iar Filarmonica, alături Liceul de Artă, au fost locurile în care am fost inițiat în muzica clasică și expus la folclorul urban și la jazz. Astfel, am compus ”Polifonii Ploieștene”, o scurtă piesă a cărei titlu denotă atât structura piesei cât și conceptul: o sinteză a muzicii clasice cu folclorul urban și jazz-ul într-o formă de fugă simfonică. Toate cele trei ingrediente sunt prezente încă din primele măsuri, în tema fugii, cântată la vioară de concertmaestru. Tema se amplifică foarte repede și este dezvoltată în întreag ansamblul, care include aproape toate instrumentele orchestrei simfonice moderne, inclusiv un țambal! Spre finalul piesei, orchestra simfonică face loc trio-ului de jazz, care intervine cu o cadență improvizată pe tema fugii, ultimul episod înainte de o coda tribală în tutti.
